Overview

Microsoft Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a two-step login process that requires a verification code sent to an alternate device. This ensures no unwanted sign-on attempts are successful on your account even if the password is stolen and it keeps your information safe and secure.

NOTE: Please note that Tennessee Tech University personnel will never ask for your Multi-Factor Authentication codes. If someone asks you for your MFA codes, please email abuse@tntech.edu with the details of the situation.

Adding Multi-Factor Authentication Methods

In order to use MFA, you will need to enroll in at least one of the following options on your account:

  • Microsoft Mobile Authenticator App (Push/Pop-up notification delivery)
  • Mobile Device (SMS Text Messaging or Call delivery)
  • Office Phone (Call delivery)
  • Security Key (AKA Hardware Security Key, YubiKey or another Security Token)

Additionally, there are two methods that are utilized for self-service password resets only. These methods can not be used to sign you into your account, only to reset your password.

  • Email

Questions & Answers

Question:  What kind of Security Key does TN Tech recommend?
Answer:  For a Hardware Security Key, TN Tech recommends the YubiKey 5-Series options. The YubiKey FIPS series or the blue YubiKey series are NOT recommended. You can purchase a YubiKey here (https://www.yubico.com/product/yubikey-5-nfc/), but make sure to purchase the proper model. You will need to purchase a YubiKey 5C if you do not have a normal USB connector. (https://www.yubico.com/product/yubikey-5c-nfc/
Question:  Does TN Tech provide a discount for these YubiKeys?
Answer:  No discounts are provided for the purchase of these suggested YubiKey devices.
