Managing your Multi-Factor Authentication Methods

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a two-step login process that requires a verification code sent to an alternate device. This ensures no unwanted sign-on attempts are successful on your account and keeps your information safe and secure. Once you have enrolled your MFA methods, it is important to understand how to manage and remove methods on your own.

 

Multi-Factor Authentication Options

Microsoft Authenticator App - downloaded from the app store (preferred authenticator app)

Authenticator App - downloaded from the app store

Phone - call or text option for a phone

Alternate Phone - call option for a secondary phone

Office Phone - call option for an office phone

Email - can only be used for SSPR (Self-Service Password Reset)

Security Questions - can only be used for SSPR (Self-Service Password Reset)

 

Deletion of a Method

If a registered device method has been changed, it can be modified or deleted. Note: at least one method of MFA must remain on the account at all times.

  1. Visit the Security Info main page at https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info or through the blue MS Info TechExpress QuickLink
  2. Select the method line you wish to remove and click Delete.
  3. A confirmation dialog will appear. Click OK to delete.

The method has been successfully deleted. It will no longer appear in the list.

 

Change the Default Sign-In Method

Once multiple MFA options are registered, the default method can be chosen by the user.

  1. Visit the Security Info main page at https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info or through the blue MS Info TechExpress QuickLink
  2. Under the title in bold is the Default sign-in method. Click Change.

  3. Select the preferred method from the list of registered options, then click Confirm.
  4. A green prompt will appear on the right-side of the browser, indicating default was changed.
     

The default method is now updated to reflect the change.

 

Change Between SMS and Call

Note: charges to the phone account holder may occur.

To swap between SMS and Call:

  1. On the method Phone entry, select Change.

  2. Choose SMS or Call me, and click Next.
  3. For Call, a call will request the pound key (#) be pressed for verification. Press the # key.
  4. Once confirmed, the call will end, and a confirmation prompt will appear on the computer.
  5. For SMS, a text message is sent to the number listed. Provide the 6-digit code, and click Next.
  6. A dialog box should confirm that the SMS number was verified. Click Done.

The method has been successfully changed.
