Managing your Microsoft Multi-Factor Authentication Methods

NOTE: Microsoft will retire its native delivery of SMS text-message and automated voice-call authentication. This change also applies when those methods are used for self-service password reset. Users whose only available method is SMS or voice may be required to register a passkey before continuing to sign in. You will need to change these methods of authentication PRIOR to February 1, 2027.

Managing your Multi-Factor Authentication Methods

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a two-step login process that requires a verification code sent to an alternate device. This ensures no unwanted sign-on attempts are successful on your account and keeps your information safe and secure. Once you have enrolled your MFA methods, it is important to understand how to manage and remove methods on your own.

Multi-Factor Authentication Options

Microsoft Authenticator App - downloaded from the app store (preferred authenticator app)

Authenticator App - downloaded from the app store (Google Authenticator for example)

Passkey - uses an external USB key (YubiKey for example), or your smartphone's camera to scan a QR code on the screen

Deletion of a Method

If a registered device method has been changed, it can be modified or deleted. Note: at least one method of MFA must remain on the account at all times.

  1. Visit the Security Info main page at https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info or through the blue Microsoft Security Info icon in TechExpress QuickLinks (see attached article on the right of the screen)
  2. Select the method line you wish to remove and click Delete.
NOTE: You cannot delete your current default method. You must establish a new default method prior to removing the old one.
  3. A confirmation dialog will appear. Click OK to delete.
    Confirmation of deletion window

The method has been successfully deleted. It will no longer appear in the list.

Change the Default Sign-In Method

Once multiple MFA options are registered, the default method can be chosen by the user.

  1. Visit the Security Info main page at https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info or through the blue Microsoft Security Info icon in TechExpress QuickLinks (see attached article on the right of the screen)
  2. Under the title in bold is the Default sign-in method. Click Change.
    Security Info page
  3. Select the preferred method from the list of registered options, then click Confirm.
  4. A green prompt will appear on the right-side of the browser, indicating default was changed.

The default method is now updated to reflect the change.

Questions about changes to SMS and call options

Question:

Why are these changes happening?

Answer:

To strengthen protection against phishing and account compromise, Microsoft is changing the authentication methods available for organizational Microsoft accounts, including accounts used in education environments.

Question:

What do I do if I break/lose/upgrade my phone?

Answer:

In the event that your phone is lost, broken, or upgraded, a new passkey, if saved on your previous device, must be established on the new device. The authenticator application that you use will also need its connection established again.
